Baltimore Orioles at my Backyard Bird Feeder

If you have a backyard bird feeder, there’s a chance you may see a Baltimore Oriole or two come visit for a snack.  I saw one while I was playing golf last year and because I don’t see them all that often it was enough to distract me from my lousy game. These birds have very bright orange and black features, and they’re quite distinctive once you know what to look for.  Generally, the male birds are a darker orange or yellow orange, while the females are a bit paler in color.  Males only have one white wingbar, while the females have two across their shoulders.  Telling the two apart can be a bit difficult since they do look very similar, but the wingbars make it somewhat easier if you have binoculars or see one up close.  In fact, many people look for Baltimore Orioles during the spring, which is when they migrate.

If you really want to see many different Baltimore Orioles at your wild bird feeder, you’ll need some tall trees and a fairly open area.  These birds don’t really like dense branches.  Because of this, you may find more Baltimore Orioles in parks or hanging out in suburban areas rather than in the city or in backyards with many trees.
